Reflexive Verbs

Reflexives verbs are verbs in which the subject in performing the action on him/ herself. These verbs will have reflexive pronouns. These reflexive pronouns will agree with the subject.

se laver The reflexive pronoun will go before the reflexive verb. je me lave tu te laves il se lave nous nous lavons vous vous lavez ils se lavent

They are getting up. Ils se lèvent. She is going to bed. Elle se couche. We do our hair every morning. Nous nous coiffons chaque matin.

Here are some of the ones we talked about last year. se blesser to wound oneself se reposer to rest se relaxer to relax se priver de sommeil to deprive oneself of sleep se peser to weigh oneself se nourrir to feed oneself (to eat) se promener to walk

La Négation You will still add ne.. pas to make the sentence negative. The ne will go before the reflexive pronoun. The pas will go after the verb.

He is not washing. Il ne se lave pas. You all are not getting ready. Vous ne vous préparez pas. We are not relaxing. Nous ne nous relaxons pas.

If you have two verbs, the reflexive pronoun goes before the reflexive verb. I get ready. I am going to get ready. Je me prépare. Je vais me préparer.

I want to go to bed at 10:00. Je veux me coucher à 10h. You can brush your teeth. Tu peux te brosser les dents. They don’t like to dry their hair. Ils n’aiment pas se secher les cheveux. You are going to wake up later. Tu vas te réveiller plus tard.

Body Parts In English, we say “I brush my teeth,” and we use a possessive pronoun. I dry my hair. I wash my hands. In French, you use a definite article (le, la, les) with body parts. Je me brosse les dents. Je me sèche les cheveux. Je me lave les mains.

Not Every verb is reflexive…Don’t get confused and start trying to make them be.

Finally, not even reflexive verbs are always reflexive. Elle se lave les mains. Elle lave le chien.
