 In 1509, Raphael was invited to the Vatican  Vatican is a small country inside Italy that is home to the Pope  Painted a portrait of Pope Julius II

 “School of Athens”-Vatican City, Apostolic Palace  Plato and Aristotle are in the middle  Raphael is on the right

 Under Pope Leo X, Raphael became the chief architect of St. Peter’s Basilica  This is the largest Christian Church, can hold 60,000 people

 In 1515, Raphael became the director of excavations in and near Rome  Excavators dig into the ground looking for artifacts  This helped scholars locate Greek and Roman texts

 Just before Raphael died, Pope Leo X was thinking of making Raphael a Cardinal  This is the position just under the pope  The College of Cardinals elects the Pope
