JOHN 11 1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” 45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs

JOHN 11 many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God

JOHN 11 who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples. 55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

THE DIVINE PLAY Tragedy, Comedy, and Fairy Tale in the Story of Lazarus

THE GOSPEL  THE Good News  “The Gospel is bad news before it is good news”—Buechner  Silence, Tragedy, Comedy, and Fairy Tale (The movements of The Gospel)  The news that enters into this story is the Gospel

SCENE 1 (V.1-16)  Jesus gets news of Lazarus’ sickness  And…gets up and runs to help his friend, right?  Verse 6  Why? He LOVES them!  It’s 1 day at least to travel to Bethany  Lazarus is already dead  Silence (Romans 5:3-5)

SCENE 1 (V.1-16)  Jesus decides to go  By doing so, he signs His own death warrant  Odd parable about night and day  Walking in the dark is dangerous  Thomas speaks up!  Verse 15  They go, even though they don’t understand

SCENE 2 (V.17-43)  What Jesus is stepping into…  Funerals in the ANE were loud  Flute player and professional mourners were hired  Lazarus’ family was well off and Lazarus was well respected  Sitting with the family for 7 days  Deep into tragedy

SCENE 2 (V.17-43)  Jesus shows up on day 4, Lazarus is dead and decaying, in Genesis God separated light from dark, Jewish belief about the soul (3 days)  Martha greets Him before he gets to the village (Verse 24-25)  In Martha’s mind, even Jesus can’t help at this point  “I am the resurrection and the life”  I am so closely identified with THIS that you could say my name and hear THAT  A to Z

SCENE 2 (V.17-43)  One of the most profound things in history happens…Jesus cries  “deeply moved”  “Embrimomai”  In classical Greek it was used to describe the snort of a horse in battle or in a race  In Koine Greek, it means outrage, fury, anger!  Why?

SCENE 2 (V.17-43)  In our culture, we either deny death or make it our friend, arrogant or sentimental  Neither was the Christian understanding  Paul describes death as THE enemy  This is the Jesus that says, “Show me the tomb.”  John Calvin says that in this passage Jesus steps toward the tomb like a gladiator steps into the arena…  Same word for ANGRY used there

SCENE 2 (V.17-43)  Jesus prays  The way He prays makes us think He’s already prayed for Lazarus  Verse 43  Same word use here that will be used for what people are doing when they shout for Jesus to be crucified

SCENE 2 (V.17-43)  Of all the ways He could have done it, He speaks…  Harks back to Genesis (7 signs, 7 days)  Completes his miraculous works with a word  And like He said in Chapter 10 about the sheep recognizing His voice, Lazarus comes out!

SCENE 3 (V.45-57)  Comedy begins…  Lazarus can’t move!  All the good Jews don’t know whether or not to touch him  Joy, shouting, elation!  On the scene comes the Pharisees  Worried about themselves  2 things: the temple, the nation (V.48-52)  Supreme irony of this!

SCENE 3 (V.45-57)  Kill a man for raising someone from the dead?!  A sign can be followed or not  Preoccupation with self can cause you to miss the miracles right in front of you  Or…we try and grab Jesus and use Him for ourselves  “Glory”—where the presence of God is thick or heavy or dwells  That’s the story of the 1 st and 7 th sign  Eternal life isn’t the story of future possibility, but rather present certainty

SCENE 4  The fairy tale and “Telling the Truth”  If only it were true!--What if it is?  What if this Jesus will call forth the dead from the earth again?  What if death is dead?  What if not is spite of our nakedness and vulnerability we will be saved?  What if God made defeat look like victory?  What if we don’t have to be afraid?
