94 Hours that Changed His- Story: The Last Supper Mark 14:12-25

94 Hours  Jesus had the Last Supper  He went to the Garden of Gethsemane  He was arrested and put on Trial, beaten and abused  He was crucified  Wrapped in spices and placed in a tomb  72 Hours He was in the tomb, until He rose again!

Mark 14:12-25  On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”  13 So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ 15 He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.” 16 So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.  17 In the evening Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 As they were at the table [a] eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”a  19 Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”  20 He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me. 21 For the Son of Man [b] must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”b  22 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”  23 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant [c] between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many. 25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”c

Da Vinci’s Last Supper

The Lord’s Supper Involves Careful Preparation  The Passover celebrates God bringing the Jews out of bondage to Egypt  The death angel passed over the Jewish homes with the blood of the lamb smeared on it’s doorposts and lentil  When no blood was applied, death would visit the home

Careful Preparations  Passover was a 24 hour celebration that started at sundown on the 15 th of Nissan and ended at sunset the next day  This year Passover is April 3 rd  This ushered in the “Feast of Unleavened Bread” which lasted for a week  All leaven (yeast) must be removed from the bread and from the home  1 Cor 5: 7-8 “Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us. [a] 8 So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread [b] of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread [c] of sincerity and truth.”abc

The Lord’s Supper Requires Careful Examination  Usually it’s a happy meal, but not here  “I tell you the truth. One of you will betray Me tonight- one who is eating with Me.”  “It isn’t me, is it?”  Why didn’t Jesus just point the finger at Judas?  Judas was never suspected  1 Cor 11:28 “A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.”

The Lord’s Supper is a Powerful Representation  1 Cor 11:23-25 “For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. [a] Do this to remember me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.”a  The bread and the cup are symbols, but what they represent is very real

Powerful Representation  His body was not broken to fulfill the Scriptures  His brow was broken open by a crown of thorns  His hands and feet were pierced with nails  His blood was poured out for our sin  May we never forget the blood of Christ

The Lord’s Supper produces Joyful Anticipation  This really is not the Last Supper  Mark 14:25 “Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”  Rev 19:6-8 “Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,  “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”—for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.”  Remember your confirmation code is JN316
