The Betrayal of God’s Faithful Son by Eric Douma Gospel of Grace Fellowship Feb. 8, 2015

Mark 14:43-44 Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away under guard.” Accusations against Jesus: 1. Blasphemy (2:7) 2. Sabbath breaking (2:24; 3:2-6) 3. Sorcery (3:22) 2

Mark 14:45-47 After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, “Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 They laid hands on Him and seized Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. Psalm 41:9 Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. 3

Mark 14:48-50 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? 49 “Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures.” 50 And they all left Him and fled. Zechariah 13:7 “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate,” Declares the LORD of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered; And I will turn My hand against the little ones. 4

Mark 15:51-52 A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they seized him. 52 But he pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked. Mark 16:5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. Amos 2:16 Even the bravest among the warriors will flee naked in that day, declares the LORD. 5

1.We should remember that God’s deeds were done publically for all to see, while those who arrested Jesus did their deeds in secret. 2. The biblical passages about Gethsemane instruct us that Christ alone brings salvation to mankind. 6

Mark 14:48-49 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? 49 “Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures.” Mark 3:6 The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him. 7

John 18:20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. Romans 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed… 8

Isaiah 50:4-9 “The Servant’s Gethsemane” 1. 50:1-2b The unresponsive family (Israel) 2. 50:2c-3 The competent Father (Yahweh) 3. 50:4-9 The responsive Son (Christ) Isaiah 50:2-3 Why was there no man when I came? When I called, why was there none to answer? Is My hand so short that it cannot ransom? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke, I make the rivers a wilderness; their fish stink for lack of water and die of thirst. 3 I clothe the heavens with blackness and make sackcloth their covering. 9

Isaiah 50:4-7 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of disciples, that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. 5 The Lord GOD has opened My ear; and I was not disobedient nor did I turn back. 6 I gave My back to those who strike Me, and My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting. 7 For the Lord GOD helps Me, therefore, I am not disgraced; therefore, I have set My face like flint… 10
