Brief Introduction Qing Ming is a time to remember the dead and the dearly departed. More important, it is a period to honour and to pay respect to one's deceased ancestors and family members. Qingming Festival, also known as Pure Brightness Festival or Tomb-sweeping Day, is one of the 24 segments of the Chinese calendar.
Origin The Tomb-Sweeping Day originated from Hanshi Day ( 寒食节 ), a memorial day for Jie Zitui ( 介子推 ),who died in 636 BC in the Spring and Autumn Period. It is said that Jie saved the starving Duke Wen of Jin( 晋文公 )’s life by serving a piece of his own leg. However, When the Wen succeeded in becoming the ruler, Jie declined his invitation, preferring to lead a hermit's life with his mother in the mountains.
Origin The Tomb-Sweeping Day originated from Hanshi Day ( 寒食节 ), a memorial day for Jie Zitui ( 介子推 ),who died in 636 BC in the Spring and Autumn Period. The Duke Wen of Jin set the forest on fire,believing that it could force Jie out.However,it lead to Jie’s death.
Qingming Festival is a time of many different activities, among which the main ones are tomb sweeping, taking a spring outing, flying kites and so on. So not only is it a day for commemorating the dead, is it also a festival for people to enjoy themselves.
The major custom in Qingming Festival is tomb sweeping. People will set out offerings of food and paper money to their ancestors.
Because Jie Zitui died embracing a willow tree, the willow is believed to have powers against evil.
Happy family Happy Time Flying kites is an activity favored by many people during the Qingming Festival.
