About the Artists Smt. Kalyani Ramani is an Indian classical musician (Carnatic style). It is generally said that music runs in the family. True to this saying, Kalyani has imbibed the essence of music from her mother, Prof. R Subbalekshmi. Kalyani's foundation in music was through intensive training from her mother for several years. She has also trained under Smt. Neela Ramagopal, a well known vocalist / teacher from Bangalore. Like her mother, Kalyani is an accomplished vocalist / vainika / teacher. Kalyani has a Masters Degree in Music from Kerala University. Blessed with a solid foundation in both vocal / instrumental styles, as well as in the theory of music, she has an uncanny ability to blend the practical and theoretical aspects of music with great ease, be it in her performances or while teaching. For more than 17 years, Kalyani has been actively engaged in promoting the cause of Carnatic music in the US. Her dedicated and "scientific" approach to training in music has attracted scores of students in vocal music and Veena. Quite fittingly, she was awarded the title of "Best Music Teacher in North America" in 2003 by Bhairavi Fine Arts Society at the world-famous Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival in recognition of her tireless and exemplary efforts. Kalyani has given several Veena and vocal performances on AIR, Television, and on stage in several cities in India. In the US, she has given numerous recitals in New Jersey, Cleveland, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. She also performed in New Jersey under the auspices of CMANA and IACRF. Kalyani and many of her students have rendered numerous solo and group concerts on special occasions like Thyagaraja Aradhana, Dikshitar Utsavam, Sangeetha Trimurthy Aradhana, Sruti, Nandalala Mission, Triveni kannada Kootta, CMANA's programs like Music Marathon, Great Composer's Day, etc. Many of her students have participated in numerous music competitions with commendable success. Suhas Rao on the violin is an accomplished Carnatic musician and one of the top violinists of the younger generation in the US. He got introduced to Carnatic music when he came under the tutelage of Smt. Tara Anand, an award winning teacher in the New England area, at the age of six. He also had his vocal training with Smt. Geetha Murali, a renowned Carnatic vocalist in the area. He underwent rigorous training under these gurus for more than 12 years and started performing at the age of 12. In addition, he has received advanced training in Chennai from stalwarts like Sri Chitravina N. Ravikiran, Prof. T.R. Subramaniam, and Smt. A. Kanyakumari. He has won many awards and prizes in all major competitions in the U.S. like Cleveland Aradhana and CMANA of NJ, including the Gottuvadyam Narayana Iyengar award for creativity. In 2007, he was awarded the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to further his training in Carnatic violin, and was featured in the Keepers of Tradition exhibit at the National Heritage Museum. Suhas has performed in concerts throughout the U.S. and in India as both a solo artist and an accompanist, performing with eminent artists like Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. R.K. Srikantan, Sri Chitravina N. Ravikiran, and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Prof. Trichy Sankaran. Lately, Suhas has been teaching both vocal and violin to many students. He just graduated from Harvard University and is working in the Cambridge area. Keerthi Venkataramani, on the mridangam, is a sophomore at South Brunswick high School, New Jersey. He started learning mridangam at the age of 6 from Sri. Suresh Ramachandran of New Jersey, and for the past 3 years has been undergoing advanced training from renowned mrudanga vidwan Melakkaveri Sri. Balaji. Thanks to the blessings and support of his Gurus and elders, and gifted with an inborn flair for percussion, Keerthi continues to make steady progress over the years pursuing this difficult and challenging fine art. With a keen ear for music, Keerthi aims to provide percussion support with an all-round sensitivity to the music as well as his fellow-musicians (vocalists and instrumentalists alike) whenever he plays on stage. He has also been fortunate to receive accolades and blessings from senior artistes, and very recently, had the privilege of accompanying the renowned violinist Sri Vittal Ramamurthy at a concert in St. Louis, Missouri and Sri Sankarana Namaboothiri in New Jersey. Keerthi is a familiar face as an accompanist at concerts and special programs hosted by several cultural and charitable organizations in the US.
