Basics of Laboratory Safety Created by L. Watson J. T. Foster and New Brigden Schools September 2013

Before Beginning Any Laboratory Exercise Know all the dangers associated with all materials you will use in this laboratory exercise. Know the proper way of using all the materials provided for the exercise. Know all of the protective measures you must use during the exercise.

Personal Safety and Protection Wear a lab apron or lab coat in the proper manner. Wear gloves in the proper manner. Wear a face shield in the proper manner. Always wear goggles!

More on Personal Safety Tie long hair neatly at the back of the neck. Wear shoes that enclose your entire feet.

Emergency Procedures Know where all of the exit doors are located. If a reagent (HCl (aq), NaOH (aq) etc) spalshes onto your face or eyes, wash your face at the eyewash station for several minutes and ensure that your instructor is notified immediately by your closest friend or neighbour.

Emergency Procedures If an irritating or harmful reagent splashes onto your body, use the emergency shower to wash your body for several minutes. Ensure that your instructor is notified either by a friend or lab neighbour or by yourself. Know where the fire extinguisher and fire blanket are located. Notify your instructor of any reagent spills.

Lab Conduct Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. Failure to do so will result in you choosing to leave the lab. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask me before proceeding. There is no such thing as a silly question! Do not eat, drink or chew gum in the lab. Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor. Unauthorized experiments are prohibited. Be prepared for work in the lab. Read all procedures thoroughly before entering. Never fool around. Horseplay, practical jokes and pranks are dangerous and will result in students losing their lab privileges.

Before You Leave The Lab Clean your workbench with disinfectant at the beginning and at the end of the laboratory exercise. Leave all equipment, samples and reagents in the lab. Leave your lab coat (apron) in the lab. Wash your hands with soap and water.
