Bioscience Summer Camp 2013 Why Biotechnology? South Mountain Community College

What is the Bioscience Summer Camp? The opportunity to: Complete a five week biotechnology course at SMCC and Earn 4 college credits!* *Students receive a stipend they can use to cover the cost of the course and still have money left over! Practice industry research techniques Take field trips to ASU’s Biodesign Institute and Tgen Network with real researchers Participate in a college Poster Presentation Participate in workshops designed to increase their STEM, study and social skills

Why Biotechnology? Because It’s Been Done! Biotechnology has created more than 200 new therapies and vaccines There are more than 400 biotech drug products and vaccines currently in clinical trials Biotechnology is responsible for hundreds of medical diagnostic tests Agricultural biotechnology benefits farmers, consumers and the environment by increasing yields Environmental biotech products make it possible to clean up hazardous waste more efficiently by harnessing pollution eating microbes

Show Me the Money! As of Dec. 31, 2006, there were 1,452 biotechnology companies in the United States, that needed workers The total value of US biotech companies was $360 billion as of late April 2008 The biotechnology industry has mushroomed since 1992, with U.S. health care biotech revenues rising from $8 billion in 1992 to $58.8 billion in 2006 U.S. biotech companies spent $27.1 billion on research and development in 2006 Employed 1.3 million people in the United States in 2006 and generated an additional 7.5 million related jobs

Who Can Apply? Competitive application process based on teacher recommendations Students that are: 1.Passionate about biology, research, biotechnology … science! 2.Recent high school graduates 3.Students who have completed a high school diploma or have graduated high school by May US citizens or Legal Residents 5.Recommended by a teacher

Who gets the stipend? $$$ NSF funding dictates that student stipends can only be awarded to qualifying underrepresented students (URM), only members of Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders/Alaska Natives ethnic/racial groups The NSF does NOT consider Asian-Americans or Anglo women or men to be underrepresented as part of its funding guidelines for this program Non URM applications will be considered and are non URM students are welcome to apply, however they will be required to cover all program costs, including tuition and fees
