MU Teaching Fellowship Program The Integration of Theory & Practice

MU Teaching Fellowship Program The nationally recognized MU Teaching Fellowship Program, offered by the College of Education and the MU Partnership for Educational Renewal (MPER), for first-year teachers integrates theory and practice in school settings.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program Fellows are recent graduates who serve as full-time classroom teachers in MPER Partner Schools who have all the rights and responsibilities of first-year teachers within their buildings. They receive on-site coaching and support from a mentor teacher.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program The course work and on-site mentoring fellows receive encourages them to assess their teaching, reflect on their strategies and develop skills that allow them to continuously learn from practice.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program Fellows also enroll in a master’s degree program in the College of Education. Course work for the program occurs during the summer before and after the first teaching year as well as through courses integrated into classroom activities during the year.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program Fellows receive a $13,601 stipend for the fellowship year and monies toward tuition (up to 33 hours) required for a master’s degree during the 15 months they are involved in the program.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program Fellows will be employed by the University of Missouri during this time period. Fellows pay their own student fees and costs for textbooks used in their courses.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program Mentor teachers are released from full-time teaching and remain in their school buildings on special assignment to work with two fellows, the University and their schools.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program Mentor teachers work directly with the fellows through-out the year, serve as a resource and coach, and even team-teach with the fellows.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program Mentor teachers are involved in professional development activities in schools and at MU. They serve as resources to the College of Education, working with the Teacher Education Program, and offering professional development for their schools or neighboring schools.

MU Teaching Fellowship Program How and where does it start?...

First, the partner school must be able to identify a possible mentor teacher (MT). The school must also have one normally-occurring teaching vacancy in the building (retirement, transfer, etc.). X X MT 4th gr.3rd gr. Partner School

The mentor teacher’s time is allocated as follows: 1/3 - mentoring his/her fellows 1/3 - working on school renewal 1/3 - working on MU activities (usually with the Teacher Development Program) X MT Partner School X X 4th gr.3rd gr.

The mentor teacher is then released from his/her classroom to provide the two open teaching vacancies needed for the fellows. The mentor teacher’s salary is still paid by the district. X MT X X 4th gr.3rd gr. Partner School

Teaching Fellow (TF) Teaching Fellow (TF) Two teaching fellows are then placed into the two open teaching positions. X MT X X 4th gr.3rd gr. Partner School

These two fellows are fully- certified teachers beginning their first year of teaching. TF X MT X X 4th gr.3rd gr. Partner School

The district will pay $19,060 per fellow to MU. This money will go towards paying his/her stipend and tuition. The fellows are employed by MU. (stipend $ & tuition $) (stipend $ & tuition $) $ 19,060 Paid by district (but employed by MU) TF X MT X X 4th gr.3rd gr. (employed by district) Partner School

The fellows are enrolled in a master’s program in the College of Education. Their coursework is delivered as follows credit hours the summer prior to the teaching year 9-11 credit hours each semester during their teaching year 3 credit hours the final summer X MT X X 4th gr.3rd gr. TF Partner School

At the end of the fellows’ second summer, they will have attained a Master in Education (M.Ed.) degree through the Curriculum & Instruction department with an emphasis in Learning & Instruction. TF X MT X X 4th gr.3rd gr. Partner School
