National Board Certification Overview LOTE Job Alikes Day Round Rock Independent School District Fall 2010

National Board: Mission Statement The mission is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by:  maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do;  providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards;  advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of NBCTs.

Nuts and Bolts There are 27 certificate fields including specializations in Art, Music Languages other than English, Career and Technical Education, Health, Physical Education, Special Education, and Library Science. Candidates are required to submit 4 portfolio entries with video components.

Nuts and Bolts Candidates have three years to work toward certification, but it is possible for a candidate to certify their first year Certification lasts for 10 years. National Board Certified teachers in RRISD earn a $2500 stipend the year they certify and a $1000 stipend each year of their certification.

RRISD Cohort for National Board RRISD Cohort Information Meetings:  Spring – TBA These dates will be announced by the Professional Development Office and forwarded to LOTE chairs for dissemination. Candidates must have five years of teaching experience to apply with financial support of RRISD.

RRISD Cohort for National Board Applications for National Board Cohort are available on the RRISD Professional Development website—due in the spring semester (last year’s due date was May 24 th ). Cohort members meet monthly beginning in June. RRISD supports candidates for National Board Certification with substitute days, compensation for application fees upon certification, certified mentors, and other helpful information.
