Individual Faculty Research ($35,000 available)  Funding in this category supports individual faculty research, scholarship and creative activities.  Funding in this category supports individual faculty research, scholarship and creative activities.  These funds support initiatives in all disciplines, can support on-going research, and may provide "seed" funding for concept development leading to other external funding submissions.  Applicants must be faculty members  A faculty member may only receive funding for any two years in a three year period  Faculty stipends are not provided in this category except…

Applications should document meeting previously identified department, unit, college or university curricular needs.  The Department Chair and the Dean of the College are required to certify by their signature on the application form that the proposed activity meets these criteria.  Faculty stipends are allowable in this category (up to $3,000* for an individual.  Stipend total up to $4,000* per proposal if more than one faculty member will receive a stipend)  A faculty member may only receive funding for any two years in a three year period

Tips for Writing High-Quality Proposals  Complete the application form in its entirety; incomplete applications cannot be reviewed.  Use terminology easily understood by faculty from diverse disciplines.  Explain things.  Justify the need for equipment and travel.  Read and obsessively follow the grant guidelines.  Use headings. Be “reader friendly.”  Be sure you include all information on the next two slides...

Requirements  Project Abstract (description, beginning and ending dates, amount requested)  Project Narrative  Project Goals and Objectives – Statement of expected outcomes and how these outcomes will be measured. It is recommended that you either number your goals and objectives or create a table.  Activities and Time Line - It is recommended that you use a table  Significance of the Project – Justify the intellectual merit of the project  Statement of Feasibility – Include a statement of qualifications of personnel to be involved in the project and any previous activities that could ensure the project’s completion if funded.  Statement of Prior Research – Include Research Council funding received for similar research and any external funding that has been received, or for which a request is pending, for this project. Include information concerning research you have conducted in the past related to this project, whether funded or not.  Statement of Project Revenue and/or Copyright  Statement Concerning Literature Review

More Requirements  Budget Justification (2 pages or less) – Provide specific explanation of how budget line items shown on the application were determined. Ensure that the amounts shown in the justification agree with those shown on the application form. Do not request the purchase of materials that are available at Winthrop. Clearly justify any questionable items. Any materials purchased become property of Winthrop.  Short Form Vita for each researcher with relevant and/or recent projects.  If any of the above information is not included, the proposal will not be reviewed.

Provisos  Travel to conferences to present research findings cannot be part of the budget  Funds cannot be awarded for the preparation of publications  A faculty member cannot be funded for more than two projects in each funding period.  Funds must be expended by June 30, 2015  A report summarizing the activities and the results of the funded project will be due by 9/15/2015 to the Academic Vice President and the Director of Sponsored Programs and Research (failure to submit this report makes the investigator ineligible for future funding) 

Submission Guidelines  Due date is 2/05/14 by 5:00 pm (late submissions cannot be accepted)  One-sided, black and white copies only  Submit one copy to Teresa Justice in 149 McLaurin  An confirmation of the receipt of your application will be sent within 24 hours.

Review Process  The Research Council will review all eligible proposals.  Recommendations may be for full funding, partial funding, or no funding.  Funding recommendations are made to the Academic Vice President for review and approval.  Applicants will receive a decision letter (usually by April).
