New York Army National Guard Operational Reserve Force with a State and Federal Mission Division of Military and Naval Affairs National Guard Bureau Over 10,000 Soldiers 60 armories Citizen Soldiers What is the Army National Guard? The New York Army National Guard is an operational reserve force that has both a state and a federal mission. We belong to the Governor, but we can be federally activated as well. The National Guard is involved in a lot of things. You’ve probably seen us in your community. We have a counterdrug problem that assists DEA and state police. We’re mobilized for state emergencies- emergencies that can range from ice storms and the snow removal in Oswego a couple years ago to 9-11 and airport security. Federally, probably about 60% of our population has served in Afghanistan or Iraq. Just a couple months ago, we had over 1,000 Soldiers return from deployment. On the state side, we fall under the Division of Military and Naval Affairs – along with the Air National Guard and the Naval Militia. We all answer to MAJ Gen Taluto our Adjutant General, who then answers to the Governor. On the federal side, we receive all our funding from National Guard Bureau. Currently we have over 10,000 Soldiers spread out across the state between approx 60 armories. These are citizen Soldiers. People that live in your community. During the week, they are mechanics, truck drivers, teachers, lawyers, doctors, students, etc. One weekend a month and two weeks a year they are Soldiers. There are a couple reasons why people join the ARNG. The top reasons are patriotism and education benefits. Keeping that in mind lets talk about our Education office.

ESO Here is a map of all our facilities. As I said, we have about 60 armories. This map also shows Air Guard facilities as well. The balloons only label the major units. As you can see, we’re pretty spread out, so no matter where your college is located, you probably have a National Guard facility near you. If your school is interested in doing outreach and would like to visit one of our facilities, please just let our office now first. All Education briefs must receive prior approval from the ESO.

Yellow Ribbon Program Colleges enter into a voluntary agreement with VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the state tuition limit. The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution. Must qualify for 100% of the benefit to use the Yellow Ribbon Program

How Does Chpt 33 Affect My Other GI Bills? 36 months of one chpt or up to 48 months by combining chpts Kickers can be used with Chpt 33 Irrevocable election to give up chpt 30, chpt 1606 or chpt 1607 (letter from VA)

Transferability To be eligible to transfer Post 9/11 GI Bill to a spouse or child a Soldier must meet three requirements: Be eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill Have at least 6 years of military service upon request (Individual Ready Reserves time does not count) Not have an adverse action flag
