Additional Thoughts About Intertextuality: Charles Bazerman of University of California Santa Barbara writes, “We create our texts out of the sea of former texts that surround us, the sea of language we live in. And we understand the texts of others within that same sea. Sometimes as writers we want to point to where we got those words from and sometime we don’t. Nonetheless, the sea of words always surrounds every text. The relation each text has to the texts surrounding it, we call intertextuality.” We want our students to be able to make connections among texts so they are able to understand the jokes and parody involved with television shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Regular Show. Students also need to decipher intertextuality so they might understand the components across texts and identify bigger themes communicated in the stories we read.

Roar by Katy Perry I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath Scared to rock the boat and make a mess So I sat quietly, agreed politely I guess that I forgot I had a choice I let you push me past the breaking point I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything You held me down, but I got up (HEY!) Already brushing off the dust You hear my voice, you hear that sound Like thunder gonna shake the ground You held me down, but I got up (HEY!) Get ready 'cause I’ve had enough I see it all, I see it now [Chorus] I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire 'Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar Louder, louder than a lion 'Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh You’re gonna hear me roar Now I’m floating like a butterfly Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes I went from zero, to my own hero You held me down, but I got up (HEY!) Already brushing off the dust You hear my voice, you hear that sound Like thunder gonna shake the ground You held me down, but I got up (HEY!) Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough I see it all, I see it now

Roar I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire ‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar Louder, louder than a lion ‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh You’re gonna hear me roar Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh You'll hear me roar Oh oh oh oh oh oh You're gonna hear me roar... Ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire ‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar Louder, louder than a lion ‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh You’re gonna hear me roar Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh You'll hear me roar Oh oh oh oh oh oh You're gonna hear me roar...

5.05 Connotations, Allusions, and Predictions ‘ROAR’ celebrates the idea of being downhearted from loss of a love, to “dusting yourself off” and coming back fighting as referenced in the metaphor to Muhammed Ali. “Perry also said she wrote ‘ROAR’ during a period when her heart hurt after she and her BF broke up. Uh, while she doesn’t explicitly say who it’s about, we can make the leap and think she must be talking about her on-off BF John Mayer.said John Mayer Here’s our assessment of ‘ROAR.’ “I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything.” Perry’s assessment is that she wasn’t firm on anything, so she was susceptible to falling, perhaps for things she shouldn’t — like in love… with a fellow musician. We can’t help but think that her shattered marriage to Russell Brand is referenced here, as well, since the line has a negative connotation. We interpret the notion of falling for everything as falling for someone else’s BS. “I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire / ‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me ROAR / Louder, louder than a lion / ‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me ROAR.” ‘Eye of the Tiger’ is a song by Survivor, which was huge in the ’80s and used in ‘Rocky III.’ It focuses on triumphing over anything and anyone in life that hurts you. The lion is the king/queen of the jungle, and Perry is using that metaphor to the fullest. But it’s so easy to relate to, and that’s why fans have responded so fervently. “Now I’m floating like a butterfly / Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes.” Perry references boxing again, this time paraphrasing Muhammad Ali, who said he floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee. She definitely kept things consistent with her metaphors and the line is one of hope and of strength. Yes, heartache and heartbreak is hard to take. But dusting yourself off and rebounding can and will happen.”
