General Information Country – Argentina. Argentina’s Capital – Buenos Aires. Spain established a permanent colony of Buenos Aires in Languages Spoken – English, Spanish, Italian, German, Toba, Mapuche, and Quecha. Location – Southern South America, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean, between Chile and Uruguay.

History Date Discovered – Famous People - Spanish navigator Juan Diaz de Solias, Jose San de Martin was hero of independence, Dr. Hector Campora president of 1973, Carlos San Menem president of 1989, Fernando De la Rua president of Major Events – 1438 – 1535: The Inca empire civilization Buenos Aires established. July 9, 1816 – Argentina officially declared their independence from Spain. Independence – Jose de San Martin led the Argentinean fight against Spain for Independence. On July 9, 1816, Argentina officially declared their independence from Spain.

Geography Major Landforms – Andes Mountains. Major Landmarks – Buenos Aires’s Obelisk, Mount Fitz Roy, Train To The Clouds – Salta, Talampaya Canyon – La Rioja. Major Bodies of Water – Amazon River and other waterfalls. Major Cities – Buenos Aires, capital.

Culture Clothing – The dress code is fairly formal. Mostly dresses for women and a suit and tie for the men. Holidays – “Carnival,” begins usually 6 weeks before Easter. La Fiesta de la Vendimia celebrated during the grape harvest season in March. Argentinians celebrate New Year’s and Christmas. Celebrate Snow Festival in August. A livestock show and festival held every July to mark the importance of the cattle industry. Music – Tango. Religions – Catholicism. Government – Operated via a representative, republican federal system which is similar to the federal system is the USA. Food – Breakfast: A light meal of rolls and jam with coffee. Lunch: Eat meat and vegetables or salads. After work, before dinner, they go to the café to drink espresso. Dinner: Largest meal of the day and includes beef.

Economy Resources/Exports - Copper, silver, Manganese, and Antimony in addition to natural gas. Brazil, USA, Chile, and China are exports. Manufacturing – Chemicals, motor vehicles, processed foods, steel, and textiles. Farming/Agriculture – Grow: Corn, grapes, lemons, peanuts, soybeans, sunflower seeds, tea, tobacco, and wheat. Work – Farming. Money – Mostly for food, clothes, and other things. We use US dollars the same as Argentines.

Climate Weather – Summer in Buenos Aires (months of Jan. and Feb.) is quite hot and humid, while winter is damp and chilly. Rainfall – 100 cm per year (39 inches) in Buenos Aires to less than 50 cm (20 inches) in Mendoza in the foot hills of the Andes. Temperatures – Annual temperatures range from 75 degrees to 51 degrees in Buenos Aires (sea level) and Cordoba, and 75 degrees to 46 degrees in Mendoza. Problems/Natural Disasters – May 28, 2012: Earthquake in Santiago del Estero. April 6, 2012: Deadly storm in Buenos Aires. January 19, 2012: Drought emergency declared in Cordoba and January 31, 2012: Severe hail and thunder storm.

Other Information Population - 40,412,376 people. Flag History - The flag of Argentina is made up of a tri- band of two light blue stripes with a white stripe separating them in the middle.
