Romans 1:18-32

The Glory of God’s Wrath  His wrath is an aspect of His pure love and righteousness  Orge vs Thumos  Thumos refers to an emotional outburst or often, uncontrolled anger

The Glory of God’s Wrath  Orge refers to a settled, fixed indignation toward something. In relation to God it is His fixed indignation toward sin.  We must look at God’ attributes in balance.  Because He is perfectly loving and perfectly righteous, He must perfectly hate.

The Glory of God’s Wrath  His wrath is glorious  His wrath is as glorious as His love, righteousness, and mercy  We understand this when we think of really “bad” people.

The Display of God’s Wrath  Direct Intervention  Adam and Eve (Genesis 3)  Noah and the flood (Genesis 6)  Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18-19)

The Display of God’s Wrath  It would be unwise to say that God would never send or cause an earthquake like the one in Haiti  It would be equally unwise to say God caused this particular earthquake to happen as a result of some sin of the Haitians.

The Display of God’s Wrath  How Should We Approach The Matter?  We don’t know why this or any other “natural” disasters occur.  God could directly judge BUT THAT SEEMS TO BE RARE IN HOW HE DISPLAYS HIS WRATH.

The Display of God’s Wrath  How Should We Approach?  God is patient and slow to anger, and He allows great room for repentance  Genesis 15:  Ananias and Sapphira

The Display of God’s Wrath  How Should We Approach?  God has put man out of the safety of the Garden into a broken creation that He allows to creak along (Romans 8: 18-21)  Man is under the curse of physical death and God does not usually prevent these things.

The Display of God’s Wrath  How Should We Approach  I like to believe He, however, limits the damage in His mercy. (What worse thing might have happened if this were not permitted to happen)  God has shown His love for Haiti in His Son and in the message of the Gospel and Christian love shown to them (Rom. 1:16-17; John 3:16)

The Display of God’s Wrath  How Should We Approach  Tragedies like Haiti have a way of startling man to stop for a moment and consider what really matters.  We are reminded by these things that a worse experience awaits in future judgment (Luke 16:3- 4)
