Infinitely Greater Than The Old Covenant Hebrews 8:1-13 Jesus

W OULD Y OU R ATHER have … a standing human priest or a seated divine priest? Jesus, our infinitely greater high priest, “sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven.” (Hebrews 8:1)

W OULD Y OU R ATHER have … a copied, man-made earthly sanctuary or the original, God-made, heavenly sanctuary? Jesus “serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man.” (Hebrews 8:2)

Jewish priests “serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: ‘See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.’” (Hebrews 8:5) (copied, man-made sanctuary) Psalm 99:1 NIV The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble; He sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake.

Acts 7:48 New Living Translation …the Most High doesn't live in temples made by human hands… 1 Corinthians 3:16 THE MESSAGE You realize, don't you, that you are the temple of God, and God himself is present in you?

W OULD Y OU R ATHER be under … an old & deficient covenant or the new & better covenant?

Hebrews 8:6-8a & 13 NIV But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which He is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people… By calling this covenant ‘new’ He has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.

Romans 8:1-3a NIV Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering…

2 Corinthians 3:6-7 New Living Translation He has enabled us to be ministers of His new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life. The old way, with laws etched in stone, led to death, though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses' face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away.

2 Corinthians 3:8-11 New Living Translation Shouldn't we expect far greater glory under the new way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God! In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way. So if the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever!

Luke 22:19-20 New Living Translation He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "This is My body, which is given for you. Do this to remember Me." After supper He took another cup of wine and said, "This cup is the new covenant between God and His people—an agreement confirmed with My blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.

W OULD Y OU R ATHER … appease God with external, physical rituals or know God in an internal, spiritual relationship?

Hebrews 8:10-12 NIV (quote of Jeremiah 31:33-34) “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put My laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Jeremiah 11:6-8 NIV The Lord said to me, "Proclaim all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: 'Listen to the terms of this covenant and follow them. From the time I brought your forefathers up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again, saying, ‘Obey Me.’ But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts. So I brought on them all the curses of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.'"

722 BC – 10 northern tribes (called Israel) conquered by Assyria 621 BC – revival under King Josiah 605 BC – Daniel taken captive under Nebuchadnezzar along with many others 586 BC – 2 southern tribes (called Judah) conquered by Babylon (captivity)

2 Corinthians 1:20 New Living Translation For all of God's promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding "Yes!" And through Christ, our "Amen" (which means "Yes") ascends to God for his glory.
