Anonymous and Safe Relinquishment of a Newborn Baby Education Template for Utah Hospitals

The Utah Newborn Safe Haven, or 'baby drop-off' law, allows a birth mother or any other person to anonymously turn over a newborn to any employee at a Utah hospital offering 24-hour services.

The Law ……. protects infants from injury and death; provides a safe place for newborns; allows secrecy and anonymity for any person dropping off the newborn. (Utah Code Ann. Sec. § 62A-4a-802)

Your Role?

[HOSPTIAL NAME] is a Utah Newborn Safe Haven Any employee can accept a newborn; No questions should be asked of the person giving-up the newborn.

Do not hesitate to accept a newborn from anyone! (Utah Code Ann. Sec. § 62A-4a-802)

If you are approached and are unable to accept the newborn, find another hospital employee who is able to take the newborn.

Medical History of the Newborn A person dropping off the newborn may wish to provide medical information on the health of the infant or medical history of the parents. Names should not be given. A Medical History Form can be found at

Immediately take the newborn to your Emergency Room Department for a health evaluation.

After a health evaluation and the newborn is stable, hospital staff will contact the Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS).

DCFS assumes legal custody of the newborn; Places the newborn for adoption.
