Of Mice And Men When writing an Of Mice and Men essay, you may wish to make a point that Lennie is ungrateful. The point (P) would look like this; Lennie is helped and supported by George, but, it is never enough, Lennie always wants more. This point is fine, there is nothing wrong with it, but IT IS NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION– because it is not supported, you are just STATING A FACT.

Time to develop you point... Lennie is helped and supported by George, but, it is never enough, Lennie always wants more. In the first chapter of the novel, Lennie made a big fuss because George didn’t have ketchup, he wanted ketchup on his beans and George didn’t have any. They got into a fight and Lennie said he’d go off and live in a cave. What’s YOUR opinion? Is that answer making a point and giving an example?

Let’s take it further Lennie is helped and supported by George, but, it is never enough, Lennie always wants more. This is evident in chapter one. George has carried tins of beans for supper and offers Lennie some, his response is quite ungrateful, as he announces “I like ‘em with ketchup.” George explains there is no Ketchup and Lennie again repeats “I like ‘em with Ketchup!” This is followed with George losing his cool, and Lennie theatens to “go off an live in one of them caves.” POINT EVIDENCE

That is a perfect P.E.E answer, POINT/CLAIM EVIDENCE EXPLINATION Great stuff - Now this student can revise the writing…

Over to you Of Mice and Men. This could be my point, my claim: Curley, frustrated with his small size small and his inability to control his wife, treats others cruelly. It could be the topic sentence of one of my body paragraphs.

What do I need? Curley, frustrated with his small size small and his inability to control his wife, treats others with impulsive cruelty. This explosive anger continually erodes what little control Curley has on his own life, as seen when he engages Lennie in a violent fight. Curley, reacting to the meer thought of being laughed at “lashes out like a terrier” lashes out and cries, “What the hell you laughin’ at?” As Lennis is confused by Curley’s reaction, he look[s] blankly at him, and asks “Huh?” “Then Curley’s rage exploded. ‘Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I’ll show ya who’s yella.’” Curley’s visceral violent response to Lennie’s innocent laughter reflects not only Curley’s frustration with his utter lack of control, but also the overwhelming powerlessness felt by all during the Great Depression.

SUCCESS!!!!!! You all know how to form P.E.E answers. Because I enjoy nagging, here is one important tip – DO NOT USE A LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG QUOTE, IF THREE WORLD WILL SUFFICE. You will get stressed trying to write it all down and the examiner will get bored. Miss Harris is happy again, - time for a dance!

An Inspector Calls – Let’s make a point.... The Inspector has an eerie presence. He arrives at the Birling home and the mood changes instantly. Mysteriously or uncannily frightening or disturbing; weird ; ghostly. Once again, this is a valid, ‘correct’ point – he IS eerie, he IS weird – I agree with this, but, it is not worthy!! It is ‘hanging in mid air,’ undeveloped – You are better than that!

Time to develop the Point..... The Inspector has an eerie presence. He arrives at the Birling home, and the mood changes instantly. The “champagne sipping” party mood vanishes. He is described as “creating an impression of massiveness, solidarity and purposefulness.” He also repeats the phrase “I haven’t much time.”
