Who is Ms. Henriques?

What will I be learning in biology this year?

Text book… Biology (pd. 1, 4, 5, & 6): Biology, by Miller & Levine (dragon fly cover) Honors (pd. 2): Essential Biology with Physiology by Campbell

Required Materials… Active address.  My …… One 1-2 inch binder w/ 5 dividers (labeled: table of contents, notes, assignments, study guides, tests & quizzes). Due Aug. 17 EXTRA CREDIT!! One roll of paper towel for 10 free points!!! Due Aug. 17

Other materials, not required but helpful… Colored pencils Erasable pen, white out, or pencil with eraser. ***NOTE! I WILL NOT ACCEPT SCRATCHED MARKS ON YOUR PAPER!*** Papers that are not legible will be returned and you will not receive credit!! Access to a computer with internet connection. See library for login information for school computers make friends with someone who has a computer.

Grading Grades are based on the following categories:  _____% Bell work  _____% Class work  _____% Homework  _____% Tests & Quizzes  _____% Updated binder & table of contents  Grades are posted online and updated every two weeks. Our Grading Scale % = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D Below 60% = F

_____% Class work… LATE WORKClass Work will be assigned in class and must be completed by the end of the class period (unless specified otherwise). Quarter projects fall into this category. If class work is taken home for completion, it must be turned in at the beginning of the next class period. No LATE WORK will be accepted at all!!!

_____% Homework… Homework will be given daily. Homework must be completed by the beginning of the next class period (unless specified otherwise). No late work be accepted at all! Be responsible and complete all assignments when they are due! I repeat!! NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!!!

_____% Tests & Quizzes Tests will be announced approximately one week in advance. At the end of every week there will be a “wrap up quiz”. This quiz will test you on the material that was covered during the course of the week.

_____% Binder One 1-2 inch binder w/ 5 dividers (labeled: table of contents, notes, assignments, study guides, tests & quizzes). This binder will contain all work done in this class. On top of keeping an organized binder, you must also keep an updated table of contents (to be filled in daily - date, description, section of binder, grade received). As you receive graded work, place the score you received in the table of contents.

_____% Bell work…directly attached to attendance!! You will always come to class on time. You will pick up the day’s required handouts located on the bookshelf. You will pick up your bell work packet. You will sit in your assigned seat. You will read the daily agenda. You will turn in the previous night’s homework. You will begin your bell work. You will list the day’s assignments. You will write the day’s purpose. You will be prepared, ready to work hard, and learn about biology!

Make up work… After an excused absence, it is your responsibility to collect make-up work on the day you return to school. In case of labs or tests, you must arrange a make-up time with the teacher- a “no show” for an appointment will result in "0" credit. The due date for an assignment is extended by the number of days missed. However, long-term projects (assigned weeks in advance) is still due on the day you return. Extended absences must be approved by the Principal to be counted as excused absences.

Daily Procedure…learn this!! Quiz on this at the end of the week!

Classroom Rule & Expectation #1 Follow directions, all policies and all procedures.  Follow directions the 1 st time I give them. If you missed the directions, ask a neighbor. Ask 2 neighbors.  Follow all polices and procedures as outlined in the Kealakehe High School Handbook and as outlined by my syllabus.

Classroom Rule & Expectation #2 Respect yourself, others and your environment.  Absolutely NO put-downs or ANY name calling!  Respect others' rights to learn and do not disrupt the class.  Swearing, obscene gestures, etc. are not appropriate!  Take care of lab equipment and keep this class clean. Pick up litter & erase graffiti if you see any.

Classroom Rule & Expectation #3 Be in your assigned seat and working on the table of contents and assigned bell when the tardy bell rings.  If you're late, come in quietly, grab handouts and sit down. We will meet after class regarding the infraction.

Classroom Rule & Expectation #4 Keep a professional learning environment.  Be prepared. Bring paper, writing utensil, required materials, and be ready to learn!  Leave food and drinks outside of the class. Exception: drinking water in a bottle, gum, breath mints, cough drops only! These items must be disposed in its proper container otherwise this privilege will be revoked!  Follow KHS “Acceptable Electronic Use Policy”. Which states “Students are not allowed to use personal cell phones, iPODs, MP3 players, and gaming devices during any class period for any reason unless it is specifically relevant to the lesson being taught. Administrators shall enforce a “zero tolerance” rule and students failing to comply shall be suspended for no less than 5 days on the first offense.

Successful Academics… Attend class daily. Even if you're absent just 1 day you will fall behind, feel lost, and overwhelmed.  Unexcused absences will result in “F” and zeros for whatever was due on that day, as well as zero for that day's work.  Excused absences - Must be cleared at the office with a note from parent or doctor. See section "Make-Up Work" Come to class on time If you're late, come in quietly, grab handouts and sit down. We will meet after class regarding the infraction. Don't lie or cheat... As a result you will receive an automatic zero and possibly administrative action! 

Following Rules & Expectations will result in… enjoyable time in class better learning bonus points Success!!

NOT following Rules & Expectations will result in… Warning and documentation. Detention (classroom chores right after class). Call home. Administrative referral.

Extra help… I am available to give you extra help, just make an appointment with me. We can meet before & after school (with an appointment). ***NOTE*** I am not always available during wiki and lunch. If I am here, I’ll more than happy to meet with you. To make the most of your time, make an appointment for us to meet before or after school.
