Deserts Desert habitats are very dry. They are full of animals and plants who need very little water. 8VQIJVpTg

Piedmont/Mountains Piedmont—gently rolling land between ocean and mountains Mountains—areas of very high land Georgia—Blue Ridge Mountains Appalachian Mountains

Wetlands (aka swamps and marshes) Wetlands—low land covered by water most of the year Swamp—wetland where mostly trees and other woody plants grow—usually fresh water

Wetlands (cont) Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp is the largest freshwater swamp in North America. Marsh—wetland where mostly soft stemmed plants and grasses grow— usually salt water

Coastal/Ocean Habitats Georgia’s coast and barrier islands are home to a lot of animals and plants. Coast—where ocean meets land

Oceans (cont) Barrier island—a sandy strip of land off shore that protects the mainland These are pictures of Tybee Island, one of the closest barrier islands.

Oceans (cont) Continental shelf—gently sloping land on the bottom of the ocean Reef—A ridge of rock on ocean bottom—home to many creatures— sponges, coral Dune—mound of sand formed by wind and water

Plants of Georgia—How do they thrive here p?page=content/education/habitats/h abitats Swamp animals—alligator, marsh rabbits, otters, raccoons, insects Plants—cypress trees, water lillies, cattails

Animals and plants in Georgia habitats (cont) Mountain animals—deer, fox, raccoons, bobcats, black bear, eagles, wild turkeys Plants—moderate temperature, rich soil allow pine, oak, maple, flowering bushes—90% is forest

Ocean plants and animals Ocean animals—warm ocean allows animals and plants to thrive--Sea turtles, sand dollars, jellyfish, coral reef Plants—sea grass, seaweed, algae

Piedmont Animals and Plants Animals—Opossums, squirrels, Canadian geese, ducks, cardinals, blue jays and owls Plants—pine, oak and hickory trees, flowering shrubs Red clay soil
