Typical Occupations Found in the Region Industries & Products - Fish, whale, ships, timber, furs, maple syrup, copper, livestock, horses, rum, whiskey and beer.

Why People Settled (Colonized) in This Region New York (Middle Colony) It was founded by the Dutch for trade and furs and became an English Colony in New Jersey (Middle Colony) It was founded in 1664 for farming and trade. Pennsylvania (Middle Colony) It was founded by William Penn and some other Quakers for religious freedom. Delaware (Middle Colony) It was founded in 1776.

Climate of the Region The Middle Colonies had a mild climate with warm summers and mild winters.

Landforms/Vegetation of the Region The geography of the Middle Colonies had a mix of the New England and Southern features but had fertile soil and land that was suited to farming

Typical Occupations Found in the Region Exported agricultural products and natural resources. The Middle colonies are often called the breadbasket colonies because they grew so many crops, especially wheat. The Middle colonies built flour mills where wheat was ground into flour, then shipped to England. A typical farm was 50 to 150 acres consisting of a house, barn, yard and fields. The Middle Colonies were also able to manufacture iron ore products such as plows, tools, kettles, nails and large blocks of iron which they exported to England.

How They Governed Themselves The government was simular to the New England colonies; Middle Colonies elected their own legislature, they were all democratic, they all had a governor, governor's court, and a court system. Government in the Middle Colonies was mainly Proprietary, but New York started as a Royal Colony.

Reflection on Key Questions Click here to go back to Main Menu I have learned that each of the three regions had different types of ways to work and that each region could supply the next in a type of cycle that is very efficient and cost saving. The most profitable region was the southern region with its massive agricultural farms and huge plantations.
