The ReThink Your Drink Initiative & Soda Free Summer Campaign reached over 250,000 Bay Area residents

ReThink Your Drink / Soda Free Summer Participant Testimonial I challenged my entire office (24 people, 9 men and 15 women) to a soda free month. They accepted and so we declared a "Soda Free October." The results were amazing!

ReThink Your Drink/Soda Free Summer Participant Testimonial I recently became the head of the Worksite Wellness Program, and have advocated to remove sodas from the vending machines and to have alternative beverages at all staff meetings and events. The vending machines are finally soda free, and the CEO and department directors have agreed to offer water and other non-caloric beverages at meetings and parties…

Environmental and norm changes are needed to impact health behaviors and health outcomes. (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

WHY make the change?

Obesity Rates are Soaring <10% 10%–14% 15%–19% 20%–24% 25%–29% ≥30% Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010

Equivalent of 43% of new calories Sweetened Beverages are the single largest contributor to the Obesity Epidemic More Calories are Being Consumed

24% of California adults drink one or more non-diet sodas a day, and those adults are 27% more likely to be overweight. ia-survey-pinpoints-soda.html#ixzz1BaJwfOc5

Strong evidence that sugar-sweetened soft drinks contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes

To meet the recommended 10,000 steps a day, sedentary workers would have to send most of their evenings in motion. Without access to fruits and vegetables on the job, a working adult would have to eat 1 to 2 cups of fruits or vegetables every waking hour after work in order to meet the recommended 3½ to 6½ cups daily.
