Intelligent Transportation Society of America Over 40,000 fatalities, 2.7 million injuries each year, economic cost exceeding $230 billion Congestion estimated to cost the economy nearly $200 billion annually; the average rush-hour commuter spends nearly a full work week stuck in traffic 28% of greenhouse gases attributed to transportation Estimated cost of needed infrastructure investment ranges from $225 – $340 billion per year, current gas tax-based funding system insufficient to meet needs Significant Transportation Challenges
