State of Wyoming Capitol Upgrades and Renovation projects Photos of the skylight and lighting project will be shown in chronological order, followed by photos of the Room 302 remodel. They will be updated throughout the 2008 interim as work progresses in Wyoming’s State Capitol.

Skylight & Lighting Project In 1997, HDH Associates provided a condition report to the Wyoming Department of Administration and Information (A&I) about weaknesses in the wire glass panels in the pyramidal skylights set in metal frames above the stained glass in the Senate and House of Representatives Chambers. The removal of the wire glass and installation of a new copper roof system was recommended. A&I implemented the HDH recommendations and chose to eliminate the skylights in the cupolas and replace that area with the new copper roof system. In 2002, the Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee requested a cost estimate from A&I to restore natural sunlight in the House and Senate Chambers. In 2004, the Select Committee on Legislative Facilities was tasked to study the options for reopening the skylights in the House and Senate Chambers to sunlight and contracted with Hefferan Partnership Lighting Design to conduct a feasibility study. Based on this study, during the 2007 General Session, the Wyoming Legislature appropriated $1,200,000 for lighting and skylight renovation in the Senate and House Chambers. Edwards Construction of Cheyenne was awarded the contract by A&I, and LSO contracted with architect Glenn Garrett to design and install the skylights and update the lighting in the Chambers, which will restore natural light to the Chambers and better illuminate the stained glass. The project is expected to be completed by early fall of 2008.

The skylights are a result of many months of planning and hard work by the many parties involved in the project.

(View facing West; April 2, 2008) The copper shown here, above the Senate Chamber, will be removed and replaced with a new skylight system.

(View facing East; April 2, 2008) Natural light will mean the difference between “night and day” in the House Chamber once the new skylight system is installed this summer.

(Senate Chamber; April 9, 2008) The Senators’ desks have been covered with plastic in the Senate Chamber to protect them from dust and debris that may fall during the skylight installation and lighting upgrades.

(House of Representatives Chamber; April 9, 2008) The Representatives’ desks have also been covered with plastic in the House Chamber to protect them from dust and debris that may fall during the skylight installation and lighting upgrades.

(House Chamber; June 26, 2008) Crews from Edwards Construction of Cheyenne use a crane to hoist materials onto the roof of the House Chamber for the new catwalk system that will be installed.

(House Chamber; June 26, 2008) The catwalk is part of the Skylight Renovation and Lighting Project in the House and Senate Chambers approved by the Wyoming Legislature in 2007.

Room 302 Remodel Over the course of the past three legislative sessions, the Wyoming Legislature has authorized a total of $255,000 for the remodel of Committee Room 302. Through an existing contract for interior design and architectural services, The Design Studio (TDSi) of Cheyenne is serving as the project manger for the remodel. When complete, the room will house all new furnishings, carpet, and lighting along with a new state-of-the-art audio and video conferencing system, with two 60-inch plasma television screens. The project is scheduled to be completed late summer of 2008.

(Room 302; April 9, 2008) The remodeling of Room 302, which is one of the main meeting rooms in the Capitol for the Wyoming Legislature, is also underway. The artwork and carpeting has been removed in preparation for the work.

(Room 302; April 9, 2008) Mike Kopriva’s Wyoming mural has been covered with plastic to protect it from damage as renovations are being completed in Room 302. When complete, the room will have new carpet, furniture, lighting and audio/visual systems.
