The Waterpocket Fold – A one hundred (100) mile long rift in the Earth’s crust. A “sudden cliff,” so to speak. The Capitol Reef – The most scenic portion of the Waterpocket Fold. Ten thousand (10,000) feet of pure sediments. Cathedral Valley – A myriad of monoliths. Current Formations

Above: Capitol Reef Top Left: The Waterpocket Fold Bottom Left: Cathedral Valley

The Laramide Orogeny – This event “reactivated” a fault in the Earth’s crust, causing one side to “fall” and uncover the layers of sediments. Erosion – The Cathedral Valley was created by the wearing away of rocks with water and wind an such, ie Erosion. Causes of Formations

The forces that shaped all of Capitol Reef, are identical to those that formed the specific formations. (Refer to the previous slide.) Erosion The Laramide Orogeny Geologic History
