Geographical position of the United States of America The USA is situated in the central part of the North America continent. It has an area of over 9 million square kilometres. The country is washed by the Pacific Ocean in the west. And in the east America is washed by the Atlantic Ocean.

America was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. By that time there were about 276 Indian tribes. The white colonizers came and began to destroy the natives and drive them away from their lands. In 1970 the Indian population of The USA and Canada was only about people.

Now the USA is the fourth largest country in the world. The population of America is about 250 million people nowadays. There are 50 states in America. There are 50 states in America.

The 18 – 19 centuries was a difficult period in the history of the USA. There were: The Seven Years War (1756 – 1763) The War of Independence (1775 – 1783) The division of nation “blacks” “whites” The Civil War (1861 – 1865)
