What is Turner Syndrome? n A disorder in women caused by an inherited chromosomal defect n This disorder inhibits sexual development and causes infertility
Frequency n 1 in 2,500 or 1 in 2,000 liveborn females n No known difference in frequency based upon race, location or socio-economic factors
Abnormalites n Short statue n Puffy hands and feet n Webbed neck n Ovarian failure n Small lower jaw n Kidney abnormalities n infertility in women and girls
What causes Turner Syndrome n Caused by the complete or partial absence of 1 of the 2 X chromosomes normally found in women n mostly MALE chromosome non-disjunction n It is not associated with any associated with any environmental or any other factors generally associated with genetic problems n No real causes have been found to be linked to this condition n It can happen to anyone
Lack of X chromosome n
Treatments & Prevention n They can’t get pregnant without estrogen therapy during teenage years n Need hormone treatment to go through puberty n Cardiac surgery n There is no known prevention for this inherited disorder
