“Killing them by the Wholesale” A lynching Rampage in South Georgia Beisy Lopez, Seth Mathews, Kyle Whitaker, Taylor Oliver

 Lynching was very popular in Georgia.  The local town people had been following the story for almost a week, In May  There were so many lynching's between 1880 and 1930 that two sociologies have called this period the ”lynching era.”

Lynching  Literally thousands of men, women, and children were murdered at the hands of mobs of lynching.  The (NAACP) reported 3,224 lynching's, between 1882 and  Whatever the actual number of lynching's so, they were common.  Ten woman were lynched in Georgia between 1880 and 1930 – but this episode stands out as being particularly gruesome.  In December 1894, mob lynched 5 men in single incident.  Lynching's were carried out on a regular basis, with mobs taking lives in august 1898 and etc…

Racism  A thing that is certain is that a black man or woman in the south was far more likely to become a victim, more than a white man or woman.  Rasicm was a strong problem in the 1900’s.

Mary Turner The mobs 8 th and 9 th victim lynched on Sunday May 19, were killed. These two victims were Mary Turner, and her unborn son. The mob tied Mary’s ankles together and hung her to a tree head down and gasoline was poured all over her, her clothes slowly burned off. A member of the mob got a sharp knife and her stomach was cut open, The unborn child fell lifelessly to the ground. Both Mary Turner and her child were buried 10 feet under the tree, the graved marked by a whiskey bottle with a cigar.

NAACP Walter White determined that there were 549 lynching victims in Georgia between 1880 to 1930 and 510 were black. Legislation passed that sheriffs had to break up and protect those involved.

 In 1910 the Census Bureau recorded 23,832 persons in Brooks County.  There are more lynching in Brooks County than any other county in Georgia. Brooks County

How Hampton Smith died The final confirmed victim of the mob violence, Sidney Johnson was the man who actually shot Hampton smith. Hampton Smith was only thirty-one when he died, While the Smiths were eating dinner one night Will Head snuck into the Smiths house and stole a gun and gave it to Sidney Johnson. Later that evening a shot was fired. Smith was murdered. According to reports, several of Hamptons Smith’s workers met in the turners home on the evening of Monday, May 13, Later that evening a shot was fired from outside the Smith home ; the bullet went through a window and hit Hampton Smith. He instantly died.
