10% A review of the successes and failures of KGV’s Environmental Group Roshini Turner 8N

What is 10%? 10% is a environmental group run by the students at King George V School A group that raises awareness of global warming They have been in action since December 2006 There aim was to save 10% by December 2007 Using the amount of money that they save they plan to renovate the school into a more eco- friendly environment

Successes In the year 2007, 10% managed to save even more than their goal They saved more than 13%! Outside KGV they have growing links with CLP Power, Hong Kong Electric, Other ESF Schools and organizations such as the WWF and Phillips In 8 months the group grew from only 15 members to more than 110 members

Failures In January 2008, KGV spent $2952 extra compared to 2006 (- 3.4%) In April 2008, KGV spent a whopping $25,020 extra compared to 2006 (-23.7%) Although they achieved their goal in 2007, students involved in survey think that the future goal of 20% cannot be achieved

Results from 2007

Future Goals and Plans In 2008, they plan to save 20% instead of 10% Energy efficient light bulbs Solar Panels on the roof Re-renovating rooms in the school to make the water system eco-friendly: Solar control window film on east and west windows

Influences on others Since the successes of 10%, other ESF secondary schools are setting up their own versions of 10% 10% has gone national Primary Schools have been given packs to start their own groups

How did they do it? With the help of Ms. Hayne, the founder of 10% they;  Delivered presentations to the student body  Promotional materials on the internet and around the school  Designed a website  Gave links to other websites and petitions
