 The Sumerians were one of the earliest urban societies to emerge in the world, in southern Mesopotamia more than 5000 years ago. The Sumerians lived in what now southern Iraq beginning about 4000 BC.

 Because they established the world’s first civilization. They made numerous contribution to are present day modern world. Besides creating a new city-state,writing system, water clock, wheel, the sailboat; they had also created the twelve month calendar based on lunar cycles.

 Men would remain bare-chested and wore that could be tied around there waist. Women usually wore gowns covering them from their shoulder to the ankles. The right arm and shoulder would be left uncovered.

 The Sumerian’s lived in mudbrick houses in southern Iraq that is where most of the Sumerian’s came from.

 They ate barley, wheat, flax, duck, ecth, summer squash, date palms, fruit seeds and different types of vegetables.

 Actually, each group had there own priest-king to whom the people owed there obedience allegiance. During the years, no ruler was successful in uniting them.

Sumerian’s had exactly 282 laws all created by Hammurabi who was the first to write laws down.

 If a son say to his father, "You are not my father," he [the father] can cut off his [the son's] locks, make him a slave and sell him for money. If a son say to his mother, "You are not my mother," she can cut off his locks, turn him out of town, or (at least) drive him away from home, deprive him of citizenship and of inheritance, but his liberty he  loses not.

 Urban= relating to a city.  Societies= all the people living and working together.  Emerge= to come out.  Established= to set up and create.  Priest= someone trained to do holy ceremonies.  Obedience= when you do what someone says.  Allegiance= loyalty.  Uniting= to bring together Figure out what word means what.
