Personality Recap

Nature V Nurture

 Nature vs. Nurture debate  NATURE- a product of the genes, a genetically inherited predisposition  NUTURE- a learned pattern of behaviour acquired through reinforcement, imitation of the behaviour of others and general environmental influences  INTERACTION-combination of influences

Traits  Trait theory states that we have primary traits and secondary traits  E.g. Primary trait – Extrovert  Secondary traits – Adventurous, confident, sociable, enthusiastic

Psychodynamic Theory  What is happening in the picture?

 The ego will release the desire of the id. Often this will result in an undesired response if the superego fails as a mechanism of control.  The superego inhibits our basic intentions, and this can be developed to bring about productive and desirable behaviour in sport

 How can a coach use knowledge of their performers personality as a tool to develop their performance / motivation?

There are 2 different approaches to the use of personality profiling in sport

Sceptical Approach  This questions the link between personality and sports performance

Credulous Approach  This supports the links between sports performance and a particular personality type.

Revise as you go.  Test your knowledge and understanding  Page 226

Next week we will start the next section.  Attitudes

Understand the reasons we give for messing up or succeding in sport  What is the most random excuse you have heard from a sports performer to account for under-performance?
