Structure of a Synovial Joint Articulating Bones = 2 or more bones that meet to create a joint. Ligaments = Attach bones to another bones. Cartilage = Shock absorber found on the end of bones Synovial Fluid = Lubricant that prevents friction at joint

Extension Activity OCR EXAM QUESTIONS 1)Give one example of a freely moveable (synovial) joint? 1 Mark 2) 2)Provide examples from different physical activities to describe how the movements that can occur at joints contribute to effective performance (4marks)

OCR MARK SCHEME 1) 1)Synovial joint is another term for a freely moveable joint and should not be rewarded. Correct Examples: Ball and socket, (hip, shoulder), Hinge (elbow, knee, ankle, interphalangeal joints of fingers, toes), Gliding (joint between the clavicle and sternum), Pivot (elbow), Condyloid/saddle (thumb, wrist).

2) Four different examples from a minimum of 2 activities. Movement about a joint (type of movement, e.g. reaching), and the application in an activity (e.g. catching) Moveable joints allow the performer to reach out, Joints allow flexion - bending - preparation to hit a shuttlecock or strike a football, And extension - straightening - hitting the shuttlecock or striking a football, Catching a ball requires similar with addition of adduction/abduction (toward or away from the midline), Similarly, in catching, supine position of the hand(s) may be required, Bending of the body (flexion) to pick up or strike an object, Circumduction, required in cricket bowling, or swimming (arm action front/back crawl).
