Genre A quick recap

Genre  A genre is a classification system for literature, art or entertainment.  New genres are invented all the time and old ones fall out of use.  Works can fit into multiple genres if they combine different elements.

Literary Genres:  At high school we study five literary genres: Novels Plays Short Stories Poetry Movies

Movie Genres:  We are probably most familiar with movie genres.  Look through the following movie posters and determine into which genre each fits:

Movie Genres:

Genres vs Themes:  Learners commonly mistake genres for themes.  When we ask you to identify a theme in a literary work, we often get the answer: “it’s a comedy” or “it’s a drama”.  Um … NO! Those are genres. Don’t confuse the two!!
