1 WLTP Open Issue Phase 1B Issue: Petrol Tank Inlet Orifice. ACEA Informal Document WLTP-06-09e

2 Current Text of WLTP gtr 5.4.Petrol tank inlet orifices Subject to paragraph below, the inlet orifice of the petrol or ethanol tank shall be so designed as to prevent the tank from being filled from a fuel pump delivery nozzle which has an external diameter of 23.6 mm or greater. Page 2

3 Current Text of WLTP gtr Paragraph shall not apply to a vehicle in respect of which both of the following conditions are satisfied: (a)The vehicle is so designed and constructed that no device designed to control the emission of gaseous and particulate compounds shall be adversely affected by leaded petrol; and (b)The vehicle is conspicuously, legibly and indelibly marked with the symbol for unleaded petrol, specified in ISO 2575:2010 "Road vehicles -- Symbols for controls, indicators and tell-tales", in a position immediately visible to a person filling the petrol tank. Additional markings are permitted. Page 3

4 Proposal: Paragraph 5.4 should be kept in the gtr. Rationale: The design requirement of the fuel inlet orifice is needed to prevent petrol engines from deliberate or misfuelling with unleaded petrol or diesel. Although leaded petrol in almost all markets is no longer available (limited availability in restricted quantities by other methods for historical cars) misfuelling with leaded petrol or diesel still should be prevented. The consequence of misfuelling can be damage to the aftertreatment system, fuel injectors & pumps and other parts. Only ECE Regulation 83 and Regulation (EC) 692/2008 describe such design criteria for passenger cars. To ensure the continuity for future regulations the text should be kept within the gtr. Design criteria to prevent misfuelling of petrol into diesel tanks should be introduced at a later stage when the worldwide standardization of fuel nozzles for diesel fuel is achieved. Page 4
