Connectivism: A Case Study of Networked Learning Using Social Media for Establishing Arts Professionals UVAC November 2012 Joanna Adeyinka-Burford Alan Durrant Paula Nottingham

Principles of Connectivism (Siemens, 2005) 1. Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions 2. Learning is a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources 3. Learning may reside in non-human appliances 4. Capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently known 5. Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate continual learning 6. Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill 7. Currency (accurate, up-to-date knowledge) is the intent of all connectivist learning activities 8. Decision-making is itself a learning process

How the principles relate to BAPP Arts 1. Participants – diversity of opinion 2. The processes of connectivism 3. Use of technology and a virtual presence 4. Contextual and shifting knowledge 5. Networks and engagement 6. Awareness of disciplinarity, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity 7. Changing notion of knowledge – learning for the moment and future 8. Making choices for professional practice and the inquiry

Learning by making connections: the student experience.
