Vanadium Meet the Elements Sahana Kanabar

Vanadium It is the 23 rd element on the periodic table The atomic number is 51 The atomic mass is It’s symbol is V The name originates from the Scandinavian “Vanadis”, which is the goddess of beauty

Classification It is classified as a transition metal The 3 rd transition metal It has more electrons

History / Discovery Vanadium was discovered “twice” First in 1803 by Andres Manuel de Rio in Mexico City He took back his claim of the discovery after someone disputed it del Rio used salts containing brown lead After heating, many of the salts turned red

History / Discovery In 1831, a Swedish chemist, Nils Gabriel Sefström isolated a new oxide This turned out to be the same element that del Rio had found He named it Vanadis In 1867, Henry Enfield managed to make a metallic vanadium

Looks Hard grey metal It has a shiny look that reflects light Can be a reddish gold powder Can be beaten into flat shapes

Supplements Vanadium can be found in mushrooms, shellfish, black pepper, parsley, dill weed, beer, wine, grain, grain products and artificially sweetened drinks It is uncertain but scientists think that we may need vanadium in small amounts It is has been suggested that vanadium may lower blood sugar levels, which would help people with diabetes

Uses Vanadium is one of the metals that can be wound as a wire It is also found in small portions in a lot of different foods Found in types of steel used for tools and vehicles
