The Overtime Game Anthony Solimine 2011

Interesting Facts/Questions What year did the NCAA start using Overtime? What is the Longest NCAA Division 1-A Game? ◦ How many overtimes did it go? 1996 In 2001, Arkansas beat Mississippi 58 to 56 in seven overtimes. The game had been tied after four quarters

Overtime Historical Trends Approximately Less than 5% of College Football Games go into overtime # of Games Source: ncaa.org

The Overtime Game What are the officials to do… ◦ After Four Quarters…Before the Coin Toss  Officials re-group and discuss scenarios  Communicate to the Coaches the Overtime procedure ◦ Coin Toss  Options:  Winner can select Offense/Defense or Choice of Side ◦ Game Card Overtime Periods 123 Giants Jets

Communication to Coaches/Coin Toss Winner should choose one of the following options: 1.Offensive or Defensive (Start at the 25 yard line) 2.Choice to Defend a Side - Which end of the field shall be used for both possession series of that overtime period  The Winner of the toss may not defer 3.The loser of the toss should exercise the remaining options for the first extra period and shall have the first choice of the two options for subsequent even numbered extra periods Giants won the toss and elected to go on offensive Overtime Periods 123 Giants Jets

Possession Each team has the ball during a possession series until it scores or fails to make a First Down ◦ Each possession will start at the 25 yard line w/o penalties Team A may not have a first and 10 if it again posses the ball after a change of team possession ◦ AR VIII - During the first possession series of a period, Team B gains possession and then losses possession to Team A, which scores a TD. Ruling: The score counts, and Team B begins its possession following the try.

Scoring Beginning with the third extra period, the team scoring a TD must attempt a two point try for the points to count

Penalties Enforce Penalties as you normally would execute (eg False Start) Fouls After a Change of Team Possession AR XII ◦ During the first possession series of a period, team A throws a forward pass and Team is flagged for illegal shift. B25 intercepts the pass and B38 clips before B25 crosses Team A’s goal-line. Ruling: No Score. No Carry Over ◦ Team A’s possession has ended If both teams foul during the down and Team B had not fouled before the change of possession, the fouls offset and the down is not replayed.

Penalty/Carry Over Play: In the first possession of OT, B37 intercepts a forward pass and is running across A’s Goal-line where he makes an obscene gesture at the A’s 5. ◦ Answer: No Score – Penalty carries over B’s 1/10 40 ◦ Time Outs in between periods shall be charged to the succeeding period Play: When Ball Carrier A22 is at the B’s 6 and racing toward the goal line, he taunts an opponent ◦ Answer: Live Ball Foul, UNS, No TD, Spot Foul at the B’s 6

Time Outs No carry over Time Outs from regulation One Time Out per period ◦ Time Outs in between periods shall be charged to the succeeding period Unused Time Out cannot carry over
