Introduction This work will help you how to save and protect water and its importance. How can we save water in order to have a better and cleaner world.

Definition of water The word water comes from the latin aqua, it’s an odourless, insipid and discoloured substance, formed by two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

Curiosities  Water is the component that appears in greater abundance in the earth's surface, it covers 71% of the planet.  It is vital for all known forms of life.  Water on earth moves continually through the water cycle of evaporation and transpiration, condensation, precipitation and runoff, usually reaching the sea.

Curiosities  2/3 of our planet’s surface is covered with water but only 0.6% is drinking water.  The remaining 97% of the planet’s water is seawater, 2% is in glaciers and icebergs. 

Water in nature It can be presented in three possible states: Solid: Snow, Ice and Hail Solid: Snow, Ice and Hail Gas: As water vapour, it is invisible and it can be found in the atmosphere. Gas: As water vapour, it is invisible and it can be found in the atmosphere. Liquid: Oceans, rivers and seas. Rain, clouds and groundwater. Liquid: Oceans, rivers and seas. Rain, clouds and groundwater.

Water consumption in Portugal Water consumption in Portugal is estimated at approximately m3/year in Agricultural, Industrial and Urban sector.

Waste of water by the three sectors Not all water demand by sector is actually used, there is a significant part associated with inefficiency and loss of use on water that is actually captured.

Effective Use of Water It is a limited resource. Corresponds to an economic interest at national level Corresponds to an economic interest at companies level Corresponds to an economic interest of the managing entities of water Corresponds to an economic interest to the citizens It is an important issue in terms of national and Community legislation It is a strategic need

Easy ways to Save Water at Home Turn off the water while soaping hands and brushing teeth. Take shorter showers, 5 minutes or less. Install new toilets that use less than 1.5 lt of water per flush Wash the car with buckets of water and not with the hose Use the water of washing the vegetables for watering plants Use the washing machine only with a full load

Curiosity:  Of all the water that is consumed at home, more than 75% is used in the bathroom.  A discharge of flushing in a western country uses the same volume of water that an inhabitant of a developing country consumes, on average, in an entire day for their hygiene, for drinking, cleaning and cooking.

Ways of saving water in Industry Use automatic water stop- cocks. Put 1.5l bottle full of sand inside of the toilet cistern If you notice a hose and faucet to pour water, close the tap
