What do you know about the parts of speech? ▪ Noun – Person, place, or thing – List three nouns in the room – What is a proper noun? – Provide me with an example ▪ Adjective – It describes things – Provide 3 adjectives for Mr. Manning ▪ Adverb – Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb – How, when, where, or how much – Usually end in ly ▪ Mr. Manning ran quickly. ▪ An incredibly handsome man, Mr. Manning is rarely without a date. ▪ Verb – Shows action – Usually ends in ed or ing

Word Set #1 Gastronomy (n) – the art of good eating ▪ Gastronomic (adj) – Mr. Manning’s gastronomic tastes ran to the traditional. ▪ Gastronomical(adj) – Mr. Manning’s gastronomical tastes ran to European delights. ▪ Gastronomically (adv) – Mr. Manning was gastronomically challenged because he rarely traveled. Gradient (n) – a rate of incline or slope ▪ Hills with large gradients are a challenge to Mr. Manning when he is competing in triathlons.

Word Set #2 Jaunt (n) – a short pleasure trip.  Mr. Manning will take a jaunt to Arizona to see his father over the Martin Luther King day holiday.  Mr. Manning makes several jaunts to Arizona each year to see his father. Jetsam (n/v) cargo or equipment thrown overboard to lighten an imperiled vessel; discarded odds and ends ▪ Mr. Manning was prepared to jetsam Mrs. Butler to create more space in the classroom. ▪ The ship had to jetsam several pieces of machinery to stay afloat. ▪ The large amount of jetsam in the water made it difficult to swim.

Word Set #3 Nettle – v – to irritate; vex  Nettles – Mr. Manning nettles Mr. Mendez constantly which makes Mr. Mendez feel bad.  Nettling – Mr. Manning had to stay after school for nettling another student.  Nettled – Mr. Manning often nettled people he did not like so they would stay away from him. Nocturnal – adj – occurring at night  Nocturnally – adv – Mr. Manning liked to shop nocturnally to avoid large crowds.

Word set #4 Despot – n – An absolute ruler ▪ Despotically – adv - Mr. Manning was not well-liked because he runs his classroom despotically. ▪ Despotic – adv – Mr. Mannings despotic approach to coaching discouraged students from coming out for the team. Deter – v – to discourage; to keep someone from doing something. ▪ Deterrent – n- Mosquito repellent serves as a deterrent to many insects at night. ▪ Deterred – v- Mr. Manning’s home made alarm system deterred burglars from robbing him. ▪ Deterring – v – Mr. Manning’s poor personality was deterring him from getting married. ▪ Deters – v – Nothing deters students from learning like a mean teacher.

Word set #5 Plethora –n – a state of excessive fullness; superabundance ▪ Mr. Manning received a plethora congratulatory text messages after he finished his Ironman race. Pliable- adj – receptive to change; easily persuaded or controlled; easily bent or twisted ▪ Pliability – adj – Pliability is not a strong characteristic of Mr. Manning’s personality.

Word set #6 Capitulate – v – to surrender under certain conditions; to give in ▪ Capitulated – v – Mr. Manning capitulated a long time before not assigning to his students. ▪ Capitulating – Mr. Manning was capitulating about whether to fail Lavan due to his lack of effort. ▪ Capitulates – Mr. Manning rarely capitulates once he has made a decision. ▪ Capitulator – Mr. Manning is not known as a capitulator. Carnivore – n – a flesh eating animal ▪ Carnivorus – Mr.Manning is a very carnivorus individual.
