Now let’s look at vegetable growing. Olericulture means the growing of vegetables. Vegetables are important for two reasons: 1.Vegetables are important for our nutrition. 2.Vegetables are important to the economy of our country.

Through horticulture we obtain much of our food. In the newspaper we can find grocery store ads about food. Click on the picture below to see the process of our food. Click on the pyramid to see how important vegetables are for our nutrition.

Vegetable Nutrition: The Government Food Pyramid shows us what our bodies need to stay healthy. Vegetables are an important part of the food pyramid.

Vegetables boost our nations economy. Each year the vegetables grown in the United States are worth over 14 billion dollars! The state that produces the most vegetables is California. Click on the icon to see a map. Better technology helps us produce more vegetables each year. Click on the icon to see how technology helps produce vegetables.

California! Most of the vegetables are grown in the Central Valley as you can see in the map. California is perfect for growing vegetables because it has so much SUN!

Technology Drip Irrigation is one way technology has improved vegetable production. It helps to produce more uniform plants and wastes much less water by dripping just the right amount of water at the base of each plant.
