THE CURRENT PICTURE EMPLOYMENT: 50,000 new jobs in the next 20 years at the Brisbane Airport precincts at the rate of approx. 2, 500 p.a. Issues that arise.. WHAT INDUSTRY SKILL SECTORS WILL THESE JOBS BE IN? WILL THERE BE A SKILLS GAP FOR SOME JOBS? IMPLICATIONS OF THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM ON SCHOOLS VOCATIONAL PREPARATION IN SCHOOLS NEW SKILLS - WILL EDUCATION & TRAINING PROVIDERS HAVE THEM ‘COVERED OFF’

INDUSTRY SKILLS COUNCILS emerging skills across 11 sectors in ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGY TRANSPORT, STORAGE & LOGISTICS TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY MANUFACTURING Are senior school subject offerings geared up to meet these needs? THERE WILL ALSO BE AN INCREASE IN THE DEMAND FOR EXISTING SKILLS IN RETAIL, HOSPITALITY, BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTING PRACTITIONERS, REAL ESTATE AND PROPERTY MANAGEMENT Are public and private RTO’s and Universities prepared for students to enroll in these areas? SOME EXAMPLES OF BARRIERS Areas of Transport, Storage & Logistics are not seen as an attractive career paths by young people! Retail is perceived as an ‘in-between’ option and is not seen as a viable career

THE NEW SKILLS AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGY NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK & INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY GREEN SKILLS IN TRADITIONAL TRADE AREAS TO ENSURE ENVIRONMANTAL SUSTAINABILITY. Members of the business industry will require education and training in the areas of E-waste management, carbon/virtual bookkeeping as well as carbon auditing, monitoring and reporting Other examples, Electrical tradesmen need to be trained to construct and fit solar power generating systems as well as smart metering systems Plumbers will require water-wise training as population increases, water availability diminishes and the recycling of ‘grey’ water becomes more prevalent

Current Picture In Senior Secondary School curriculum in BN&W region

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO ADDRESS THIS GROWTH AND FILL IN THE SKILLS ‘GAP’? Create sustainable partnerships designed to develop pathways for young people into these careers Align education & training curriculum and/or delivery with the potential new skill requirements within emerging industry needs Public and private RTO’s continue to identify the new competency based training requirements in the areas of expansion Universities explore the gap that is imminent and provide advanced curricula to meet the emerging needs of these industries Transport options need to be addressed by appropriate Authorities within the ATC & BAC precincts for existing and potential employees and the community
