4 Definition of a clause A clause is a group of words that form a grammatical unit that has a subject and a finite verb Example: I hurried because I was late Clause independent Clause dependent

5 conjunctions Two independent clauses (or two sentences) can be combined using conjunction 1.For additional information, use “and”. Rita is a cheerful girl. Rita is clever.  Rita is a clever and cheerful girl. I bought a book. I bought a CD.  I bought a book and a CD. The man and the parents put on new clothing. They went to the girl’s home.  The man and the parents put on new clothing, and they went to the girl’s home.

6 2.For contrasting information, use “but” The room was big. The room was dark.  The room was big but dark. The house is big and beautiful. It is too expensive.  The house is big and beautiful, but it is too expensive. He has been working there for 10 years. He never got promoted.  He has been working there for 10 years but (he) never got promoted.

7 3. For cause-effect information, use “so”, or “because” He is very clever, so he always gets good grades. Because he is very clever, he always gets good grades. He always gets good grades because he is very clever (note: use no comma)

8 Conclusions Clauses are parts of a sentence that has a subject and a verb. Two independent clauses can be joined by connectors/conjunctions to form a sentence.
