The Necessity of Classes Outside of a Given Major The Timid Techs

The Problem Students are uneducated about the reasons to take courses outside of their degree, therefore the students put forth little effort that is needed to gain necessary information from the class. How can Thomas Nelson Community College best educate the necessity of these classes?

Who is Impacted? 1. The students: Students would rather only take classes that only apply to their career field. Thus, the students receive a worse grade than they should. 2. The Teachers: Teachers grades are negatively impacted by the lack of effort by the students. Teachers will have more difficulty moving forward in their careers with a lower passing rate. 3. The college: The college, overall, will suffer by the poor grades made by students. When potential students look at a college they expect to see a college with a good reputation at passing students with good grades.

Who Can Fix It? 1. Dr. Lonnie Schaffer, Vice President of Academic Affairs -Dr. Schaffer will be able to present the needs of the college as a whole. 2. Dr. Daniel Lufkin, Vice President of Student Affairs -Dr. Lufkin will be able to present the needs of the students.

The Research The timid techs have surveyed one hundred students, as well as interviewed Colleges Success Course (SDV 100) teachers and advisors. We have found that over eighty percent of students question why they have to take a course outside of their chosen major. We have found that SDV 100 teachers say that there could be space for educating students on why they need to take classes outside of a specific degree. We have found that advisors say that students should consult them about the classes as well as be educated about the classes in SDV 100.

The Recommendation The Timid Techs have three solutions to teach students the importance of a variety of different classes: 1. The school could teach students during Gator Orientation 2. The SDV 100 teachers could teach students during the class. 3. The advisors could inform students when they sign-up for classes. Timid techs and TNCC advisors agree that primarily teach the importance of taking classes outside of their major in the SDV 100 course, as well as have advisors consult the students to reaffirm the information is the optimal solution.
