The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom

A TEST..?

Two kinds of fear…

The ATTRACTIVENESS of fearing the LORD

From the Oxford dictionary… Origin of “revere”: mid 17th century: from French révérer or Latin revereri, from re- (expressing intensive force) + vereri ‘to fear’ Origin of “awe”: Old English ege ‘terror, dread, awe’, replaced in Middle English by forms related to Old Norse agi

There is only ONE GOD, but he exists in THREE PERSONS * The identity of the Bible as the Word of God cf 1 Thess 2:1-9, Acts 17:2-3, 2 Peter 3:15-16 * Not the word of men * What difference does it make? * The change in those who become Christians The ATTRACTIVENESS of fearing the LORD Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. (Psalm 2:11) And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, "Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed." (Revelation 15:3-4)

The ATTRACTIVENESS of fearing the LORD

Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed." (Revelation 15:3-4) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD The Bible says we should fear the LORD

So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied. (Acts 9:31) … submitting to one another in the fear of Christ (Ephesians 5:21) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD The Bible says we should fear the LORD

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. (Job 1:1) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face." (Job 1:8-11) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD… (Job 1:12) [Job lost 7 sons, 3 daughter, 7000 sheep, 3000 camels, 500 oxen, 500 donkeys, very many servants] The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong. (Job 1:20-22) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. (Job 2:7) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die." But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips. (Job 2:9-10) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter, as long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit. Far be it from me to say that you are right; till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days. (Job 27:2-6) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

Oh, that I had one to hear me! (Here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me!) Oh, that I had the indictment written by my adversary! (Job 31:35) So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. Then Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned with anger. He burned with anger at Job because he justified himself rather than God. (Job 32:1-2) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements--surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? "Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed'"? (Job 38:1-11) (Job 32:1-2) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: "Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? "Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor. Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him. The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand. Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below. Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. (Job 40:6-14) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

Then Job answered the LORD and said: "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. 'Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.' I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” (Job 42:1-6) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: "My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. (Job 42:7) And the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning. And he had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. He had also seven sons and three daughters. (Job 42:12-13) The NECESSITY of fearing the LORD … because of who God is (and who we are)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7) The WISDOM of fearing the LORD … the beginning of Wisdom It begins with attitude Sin is firstly about attitude to God Are you ready to listen to God? Remember the temple?

If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. (Psalm 130:3-4) The WISDOM of fearing the LORD Forgiveness and fear… that is Wisdom!

And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. (1 Peter 1:17-19) The WISDOM of fearing the LORD Forgiveness and fear… that is Wisdom!

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. (Psalm 34:8-10) The WISDOM of fearing the LORD The reward of fearing the LORD!

And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying, "We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.“ (Revelation 11:15-18) The WISDOM of fearing the LORD The reward of fearing the LORD!

Do you fear the LORD?
