Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate Silvia Bettez: Student Coordinator Dr. George Noblit: Faculty Contact

The Carnegie Foundation “The Foundation is a major national and international center for research and policy studies about teaching. Its mission is to address the hardest problems faced in teaching in public schools, colleges and universities—that is, how to succeed in the classroom, how best to achieve lasting student learning, and how to assess the impact of teaching on students.”

CID Overview The Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID) is a multi-year research and action project to support departments' efforts to more purposefully structure their doctoral programs. Partner and Allied Departments have been selected for the CID in chemistry, education, English, history, mathematics, and neurosciences.

UNC SOE and CID The UNC School of Education (SOE) is one of ten universities chosen as a Partner Department. In Fall 2003 a CID committee was formed. Faculty and graduate students work together on the CID committee and have been meeting twice a month since Fall 2003.

CID Accomplishments Ongoing discussion around the question: “What is educational research?” based on a variety of readings Updated policies for doctorate approved by GSD and faculty Beginning data collection with students about the education program Review of PhD core courses
