ABOUT THE SALTON SEA WHAT IS THE SALTON SEA? Sub-sea level basin or lake California's largest lake HOW WAS IT FORMED? Massive flooding caused by the Colorado River in 1905 Because there is no outlet for the water, evaporation has made the water salty over time om/video_pages/salton- sea.html om/video_pages/salton- sea.html

HOW IS THE SALTON SEA USED? Agricultural drainage and run-off In the 1950’s the lake was stocked with fish, creating a popular fishing hole Over 380 species of birds visit the sea while migrating Many endangered species make their home here  What kind of problems do you think the chemical run-off into the Salton Sea can cause? How does it affect the wild life?

GREAT SALT LAKE

ABOUT THE GREAT SALT LAKE Largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River High salt concentration because there is no outlet for water; water evaporates and leaves salt behind The water is too salty for fish and aquatic wild life to survive (with the exception of algae, a special kind of shrimp and some flies!) You cannot sink in the Great Salt Lake!  What characteristics do the Great Salt Lake and the Salton Sea share?

A series of cattle trails about 800 miles long Named after Scot- Cherokee trader Jesse Chisholm After the Civil War, long horn cattle were abundant and herded along these trails to be relocated Herds as large as 10,000 were driven from Texas to Kansas ABOUT THE CHISHOLM TRAIL  What industry does the Chisholm Trail represent?  What do you think life was like for cowboys on the Chisholm Trail during the 1800’s?  After the Civil War, the value of long horn cattle declined. Why do you think this happened?

After the Wright Brothers’ flights at Kitty Hawk, it would be two more years and two more designs before the first practical airplane was created
