Isolation and Women STEM Faculty Chrystal A. S. Smith, University of South Florida Penny J. Gilmer, Florida State University Anne Donnelly, University of Florida NSF ADVANCE-PAID Award # Joint Annual Meeting, NSF, Alliance for the Advancement of Florida’s Academic Women in Chemistry and Engineering presents

Introduction Isolation is one of the major factors that impacts the success of women STEM faculty. In addition to the literature, our conversations with women STEM faculty during grant activities influenced our decision to conduct further research on this important issue. 2 Joint Annual Meeting, NSF,

Overview of AAFAWCE Alliance for the Advancement of Florida’s Academic Women in Chemistry and Engineering (AAFAWCE) is a collaboration of five Florida state universities: ᴏ University of South Florida ᴏ Florida State University ᴏ University of Florida ᴏ Florida International University ᴏ Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University AAFAWCE’s mission is to increase the representation and promote the advancement of academic women in chemistry and engineering, thereby developing a more diverse science and engineering workforce. 3 Joint Annual Meeting, NSF,

Overview of AAFAWCE FSU is a comprehensive university with graduate, undergraduate, and professional programs, currently enrolling more than 41,000 students. FSU shares a College of Engineering with FAMU. UF is one of only 17 public, land-grant universities in the American Association of Universities, and it is one of the top five largest institutions in the country. FAMU is a historically black university with 12,000 students in 62 undergraduate programs, 39 MA programs, and 10 doctoral programs, 6 of which are within the joint FAMU/FSU Engineering program. The lead university on the project, USF, engages in high research activity and is designated as Community Engaged by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. FIU is designated as a Hispanic-serving public research institution. Offering both graduate and undergraduate degrees on multiple campuses, FIU prides itself on its commitment to solving local and global problems. 4 Joint Annual Meeting, NSF,
