A vision for future healthcare in Europe. The challenge for the new generation of healthcare managers. EHMA 2014 Conference, Birmingham University Wednesday 25 June Dr David Somekh European Health Futures Forum

2 The future of European healthcare – a possible scenario

Putting the Mission into practice: 1. Create an open interactive Forum built as a network of networks For example: EMPATHIE network: 20 NGOs, academic institutes Involvement with SANCO PS and Health Quality Working Group Links with: e.g. EHMA, EFPC ECH Alliance (Connected health eco-systems) Health 2.0 (meet-ups) across Europe EHFF website:

2. Use the Forum as a resource for knowledge exchange on the future of health and healthcare in Europe Four strands so far: 1.Diverse EHFF Community established 2.Promotion of knowledge transfer research (e.g. involvement in DGSANCO Expert panel) 3. Patient empowerment (facilitated two successful tender bids and participation in EIP) 4. Education, education, education

3. Promote the active use of future methodologies in the EU context of health and healthcare For example: Horizon scanning: involvement in Joint Action on workforce planning Concept of ‘radio telescope’ (use of established networks across Europe) Major multi-stakeholder scenario project on health in Europe (a big strategic conversation)

4. Enable transformational change through multi-stakeholder collaboration in a holistic context For example: 1.Paradigm shift project (Horizon 2020) 2.Pilot project with EIP reference sites 3.Google hang-out educational seminars 4.Concept of Global Action Networks (Steve Waddell) ‘Genius is not about having magnificent Ideas, but about recognising them’ Rene Magritte

5. Create a virtual intergenerational community of healthcare innovators For example: EVY Connect: Linked-in community of young visionary professionals, national meet-ups and an annual conference Think: think tanks as nurseries for bright ideas and (disruptive) innovations Share: an open source network for sharing: ‘ we connect to inspire, to (co)create the future of European healthcare.’
