What is a Clam? ANIMAL Made of many cells, eats food. MOLLUSK: grouped with snail, slugs, octopus, squid, scallops, mussels, etc. INVERTEBRATE: No bones or spine. BIVALVE: 2 shells.

Clam Anatomy Clams have two shells on the outside. A large muscular foot to help them move and dig. A siphon to help them breath and eat.

Inside the Clam

Clam Parts Shell = help protect clam from predators. Foot = helps the clam move. Siphon = brings in water and takes out waste. Gills = to take oxygen and food out of the water. Mouth = to eat microscopic organisms.

What do Clams Eat? They are filter feeders. gills take out microscopic organisms from the water.

Plankton The microscopic organisms are called plankton and diatoms. DIATOMSPLANKTON

How do Clams Help the Bay? Since they are filter feeders they clean the water by taking out pollutants. Check out this video to see how clams and other filter feeders are essential parts to an underwater ecosystem.

How can YOU help the Bay? DON’T POLLUTE! PICK UP GARBAGE! KEEP THE BAY CLEAN!

Growing Shellfish in the Classroom The LIT’s grew baby clams and oysters this year in the Science Lab. They will be placed back into the bay this June. Come and visit them in the Science Lab. They love the attention! : )

BUY A CLAM  HELP RECLAM THE BAY BY: Buying a clam for $1.00. Coloring it and cutting it out. Add the clam to the ReClam the Bay Bulletin Board.

ReClam the Bay Organization Non Profit Buy baby seed clams.

Upwellers Help clams grow in nurseries called upwellers.

Community Allow the community to become involved with the clams before releasing them back into the Bay.

THANK YOU !! From the Leaders in Training &
